"May the fleas of a thousand camels invade your stinky armpits!" she muttered under her breath and glared furiously at the lady in purple. The time now was 11.52am. Today was the big day... The day which ten years of education was going to lead to. She cranked her head to the left and was returned with looks of anxiety and nonchalance; girls were seen crossing and uncrossing their legs, boys were leaning back on their chairs and staring, with arms crossed, at the spinning fans above them.

"R-r-r-iiiinnnnggg!" went the bell. Everyone looked at each other eagerly. Who would be the one to lead the pack of eager students to the place where those pieces of paper were pasted? Soon, in a blink of an eye, only she was left in her seat. She hurriedly grabbed her packet of tissue paper and made a beeline for office.

"1, 2, 3, 4... Hi-5!" with the ever-so-familiar theme song of that show playing in her mind. She looked at the rest of the students fighting their way to the front. But all she had to know she already did. Nothing could change the fact that that was what she had studied for. Fighting back her tears, she hastily rummaged through her skirt pocket and tightened her fingers around the black key chain. With a flick of a wrist, the keypad slided open and she punched in the numbers, albeit very reluctantly.

"Hello... Gong Gong... I've just gotten back my results..." she mumbled softly.
"HAH? What...? Who are you?" replied the voice at the other end of the line in mandarin. She rolled her eyes and repeated herself once more. Before long, that call soon ended and she preceded to break the "good" news again, this time to her mother and tuition teacher.

"Just do your best the next time.." The words kept ringing in her mind while she trode back to the classroom on the fourth floor alone.

"If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops, oh what a rain that would be..."

Driving along that familiar stretch of road with his three grandchildren in tow, the smartly attired man in his late seventies, with his hair neatly combed to one end took a slight glance at the digital clock fitted snugly on the dashboard. The bright lime green digits read 1.18pm. He accelerated and cruised swiftly past the building. In a blur of colours, he could make out a sign which seemed to scream to all motorists, "PUMP THIRTY-FIVE DOLLARS WORTH OF PETROL, AND GET ONE BOTTLE OF GREEN TEA FREE!" He thought to himself that for fifty dollars, all he would get was a bottle of green tea? "How amusing" remarked the little voice only he could hear.

Thankfully, traffic was smooth and thus, the journey from Hougang to Bedok would be able to take less than twenty minutes. His eldest granddaughter sat beside him in the rear seat, listening to her Ipod with her eyes half closed. "How odd," the little voice went again. "How do teenagers stand having such alien objects inside their ears? And she's sleeping..." He came to a stop at the traffic junction and recalled how once, she had offered to let him listen through those weird round objects. When he had them in his ear, all he could hear were the loud thumping beats of drums. He cringed at that thought and stepped on the acclerator once more.

Over at the back of the car, his two other granchildren, one boy and a girl, were making a racket they would be sure to awaken the dead.
"GIVE ME DOGGY!" wailed the girl at the top of her lungs.
"NO. It's mine" went the boy. Soon negotiations could be heard arising from the two and they finally decided they would take turns to hug Doggy when the car reached a red light. He shook his head and smiled. "How does Yan ever stand those two?" again went that little voice. Yan was his eldest daughter, mother of those three children. Both teachers by profession, him and his late wife, they had been surrounded by youths all their life. However those two really deserved the prize for being the noisiest kids. Yan too was a teacher, so was her husband. The car reached another traffic light and memories came flashing back to mind.

He had been born in Indonesia, and came to Singapore as a wide-eyed youth, eager to see the world. His parents were both more financially well-off than the rest, to say the least...

The memories then flashed to his first day as a teacher. Then, as one of the many smartly clothed up men standing inside the school's compounds, he felt a tinge of nervousness. The many long months of training were all in preparation for this very day. To lead and guide students to their best abilities and potential, all this repeated over and over in his head...

The impatient honking of the car behind him soon roused him from his thoughts and once again, the car moved. "How impatient these youngsters of today are." muttered the voice with annoyance. Soon, he turned round the bend and reached his first stop, where his granddaughter would alight to head for her Sunday tuition classes.

"Bye bye Gong Gong" She went. She waved, smiled and spun around. He smiled and nodded his head. As her image slowly blended in with the surroundings, he found himself left with the two rascals. Slowly but surely, he stepped on the acclerator once more to fetch them home, before heading for his routine Sunday Tai-Chi lessons as well.

"我送你离开千里之外........" went the voice on the radio.

I grasped her arm, her eyes looking terrified and uncharacteristically as though she had been crying. Her muffled words, in between sobs were barely audible.

"I... I... I fear..." her pretty almond-shaped brown eyes glistening and brimming with tears.

"What do you fear?... Don't worry.. I'm here... It's alright to let out all your fears... Just take a deep breath and calm down... And while you're at it, here, have a strawberry milk tea." I offered her the cup of "Sweet Talk" bubble tea I had purchased earlier while on my way back. "Now.. calm down and tell me what has happened." I gave her my warmest smile.

"I... I... I don't know what to expect..." she cried. " My mind's a whirl and I can't seem to focus on anything I do!" she exclaimed with a sigh of resignation. "Furthermore... If I don't do well... my parents will feel so disappointed..." she moaned in exasperation. "I'm such a worthless daughter!" She exclaimed and buried her head in her hands, before sobbing her heart out, her dark locks of hair hanging loosely around her cupped hands.

"Ohhh dear... don't worry about that. What's done is already done... Besides, look on the bright side! Your agonizing wait would have ended, right?" I said in the cheeriest of voices I could muster. But deep inside I felt her fear as well. Her fear gripped my heart and I turned pale. How I wished time would not pass us by so quickly. If only time could just come to a complete stop...
Here I was, standing beside while she waited with bated breath. However, I was determined not to let anyone, including her, sense my feelings. I took a deep breath as well and regained my composure. All around us, students thronged the general office. The incessent chatter however, failed to mask the fact that deep down in everyone's hearts, they were all nervous and butterflies were fluttering by in their stomachs. Fluttering as though they were out in this wonderful meadow with the sun's shining rays illuminating the surroundings, but in actual fact, that meadow was nothing more than a bottomless pit. A pit where every student wanted to fall into. Where they would never know what happened next. Isn't it exactly like what they say, "Ignorance is bliss"?

Her eyes misted and with her vision blurry, she grasped my hand with a steely grip; an overwhelming depression and painful anxiety overcame the two of us. I tried moving my lips but when I saw her looking at me with those lacklustre eyes that were desperate and frightened, I remained silent, willing myself to avert that gaze of hers. Minutes seemed like an eternity that never came. All of a sudden, the bell rang. The chatter had given way to a dreadful silence, which apart from the "vroom-ing" sounds of the vehicles driving past the compounds, rang across the entire area. All at once, it was as though everyone's hearts were beating in unison. You could literally hear the pumping of oxygen-rich blood around the various arteries. It was "that" silent.

Within moments, the loudspeaker crackled to life. At first, only the static from the microphone could be heard. However, within seconds, the all-too-familiar voice could be heard booming from the various speakers positioned at key points in the school's compounds. Soon, when the speaker had said all she had had to say, the ghastly silence returned back to haunt us.

"Here, let's go take a look at your results, shall we?"
